Robust Physique

A quick look at the Galaxy Pro, the first thing that will pop up in your mind is the image of a BlackBerry. The entire device has a masculine physique, with the upper body hosting a 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen display. The lower portion, on the other hand, is occupied by a wide, dark silver QWERTY keypad that lights up, making it usable even in the dark. Above the keypad, situated are the menu, home, back and search buttons which are a standard among Android handsets. Unfortunately, the buttons mentioned are not backlit, unlike the keypad. Samsung furthers the elegance of the Galaxy Pro by framing its entire fascia with a reflective, chrome-like border.

The reflective, chrome-like lining that borders the Galaxy Pro makes it look more sophisticated. Also shown in this shot are the handset's 3.5mm headphone out, concealed microUSB port, and the volume rocker.

In spite of the fact that the back cover of the Galaxy Pro is made up of plastic, it brandishes a nice texture and has the appearance of crafted leather. Combined with the rounded edges, the texture of the back cover enhances your grip on the smartphone. Taking off the back cover, you will find that both the SIM and microSD card slots are easily accessible and not obscured under the battery module. This means that you no longer have to restart the handset if you will insert a microSD card into its respective slot.

UI, Features, Performance

Running on Android 2.2, the Galaxy Pro provides you with three home screens on which you can add widgets, shortcuts, and folders by simply doing a long tap on the display. The Galaxy Pro comes with a built-in accelerometer but the auto-orient feature works only on some applications, such as on Messaging, Email, Internet browser, and Google Maps. Some applications will auto-orient independently from the accelerometer’s influence. There will be times that you have to hold the handset horizontally just to view these applications correctly.
The Galaxy Pro makes use of a capacitive display but multitouch is not supported. You cannot execute pinch-to-zoom on this Froyo smartphone. You have to use the UI’s virtual +/- button to magnify a map, photo or a website, as if you were still maneuvering a resistive touchscreen display.
Although the Quadrant Standard benchmark, in theory, places the Galaxy Pro’s performance between those of the Galaxy S and the Nexus One, its real-world operation is held back by its 320 x 240 display resolution and graphics. The Galaxy Pro is capable of handling low resolution videos and streaming content on YouTube, but not playing HD videos. If you are not into watching videos, this Samsung has a built-in music player and FM radio. The 3.15-megapixel camera, on the other hand, produces image quality that is tolerable for a handset. It can also record videos at 320 x 240 resolution.

Packed with a 1350mAh lithium-ion battery module, the Galaxy Pro promises to offer up to 610 hours of standby time and 11 hours of talk time. Based on our battery test, which involved looping a playlist of songs while the handset’s Wi-Fi is deactivated and its display is turned off, the Galaxy Pro lasted up to 18 hours. Under normal usage, wherein the handset’s Wi-Fi is on and engages in random text messaging and phone calls, it stayed on up to three days.
